According to the Department of Energy, heating and cooling bills can comprise over half of your annual utility expenses. Fortunately, there are a few things that you can do with your air conditioning system that will help make it more efficient. Local HVAC company J&M shares some of the most cost-efficient ones here:
1. Keep the vents clean — Good airflow is key to air conditioning system efficiency. Make it a point to regularly clean the air vents around your house. Air vent grilles tend to catch dust, hair and other small debris. Given their location, which can either be near the ceiling or the floor, they’re easy to overlook. Also, make sure the air vents aren’t blocked by furniture. In addition to impeding airflow, cool or warm air may damage said furniture.
2. Keep the windows and doors closed — Open windows and doors allow heat from the outdoors to enter your home, which can raise the workload on your air conditioning system, consuming more energy. If you’ve invested in ENERGY STAR®-certified windows and entry doors, keeping them open would defeat their purpose.
3. Clean the condenser unit’s exterior — Your air conditioning system’s outdoor unit is equipped with an enclosure that requires airflow to vent heat. Often leaves and debris make their way into the enclosure and impede airflow. While opening the enclosure and cleaning inside it is best left to HVAC professionals like us, you can clean its exterior regularly to prevent leaves and debris from getting in.
4. Keep the thermostat away from heating appliances — Thermostats are equipped with a sensor that detects changes in the home’s temperature. If it senses that the temperature of the house is warmer than it should be, it “tells” the air conditioner to increase its output. This is why your thermostat needs to be located in a spot that’s at your home’s average temperature. Installing it near a stove, window, heating vent or other heat source will cause the thermostat to “misread” the room temperature, resulting in higher AC usage.
