AC repair is one of those tasks that should always be left to professionals like us. While we appreciate your business, the main reason why DIY repairs are a bad idea is that they present unnecessary risks. In today’s post, local HVAC company J&M shares the risks of performing DIY HVAC repairs.
1. It’s unsafe — HVAC systems are made up of powerful pieces of equipment that utilize large amounts of electricity, which means there’s a great risk of electric shock when they’re dismantled by inexperienced hands. A short circuit could damage the home’s electrical system and may even result in fire or damage to other electronic equipment. Fixing refrigerant leaks also requires protection, as accidentally inhaling its vapors can result in sudden oxygen deprivation.
2. It will cost you more — It may sound counterintuitive, considering that DIY is supposed to help you save on labor costs, but DIY AC repair will actually cost you more than simply hiring a professional. You’ll need specific tools for troubleshooting, diagnosis and repairs. Most of these tools aren’t common household equipment, so you’ll need to buy them yourself, and you’ll probably end up only using them once or twice. Also, in case DIY repairs don’t fix the problem, you’ll have to hire a professional to take care of it.
3. It may be illegal — The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has strict laws regarding the handling of systems that utilize refrigerants, including refrigerators, heat pumps and air conditioners. In some areas, only qualified professionals are allowed to handle them, which can make performing DIY repairs illegal. If you’re unsure if this applies to your area, it’s better to err on the side of caution and hire a local HVAC technician.
4. It can void your warranty — One of the most common exceptions found in HVAC warranties—in fact, in nearly every type of warranty coverage—is unauthorized changes to the product. This includes repairs performed by anyone other than an authorized representative, in which case an HVAC manufacturer may decide to void warranty coverage.
