Heating and cooling systems are essential to the comfort of your interior space. Fortunately, your home or commercial building doesn’t need sophisticated new units in order to save energy. In fact, saving energy can be as simple as identifying and fixing the main sources of energy waste in your current HVAC system. An AC repair contractor shares some things you need to look out for below:
Filthy filters. It’s fairly easy to fall behind on small preventive maintenance tasks like changing filters, but this simple mistake can actually lead to significant energy losses. Filters can become so clogged with dirt and dust buildup that your unit will have to work twice as hard to produce the same amount of air as before. A general rule of thumb is to change one- to two-inch filters every three months.
Dirty coils. The heating and cooling components of your HVAC system won’t be able to properly condition the incoming air if your coils are too dirty. As with dusty filters, this prompts your unit to work even harder to maintain the same level of conditioning. An AC repair expert says that dirt particles from the outdoors and sweaters shedding lint into the air are both common causes of accumulation on the indoor coil. Another potential issue is mowing grass, especially if you’re blowing yard clippings near an outdoor AC unit.
Incorrect ventilation rate. Make sure your ventilation unit is bringing in an adequate percentage of outside air. For most spaces, ASHRAE requires 10 CFM per person. If you don’t know how to measure this, you need to hire an HVAC expert to come out and tell you. You may also want to check the dampers and have your controls reviewed in order to control your energy expenditures.
