Air conditioners operate and have the same basic components as your home refrigerator. Refrigerators transfer heat from their cool interior to the warm areas of your home. Likewise, an air conditioner transfers heat from inside your home to the outside. Here’s a look at the different components that make up an air conditioning unit and how it works to keep you cool.
The evaporator, a cold indoor coil inside an air conditioner, cools your home. The condenser, a hot outdoor coil, releases the collected heat outside. Both coils are serpentine tubing surrounded by aluminum fins. This tubing is usually made of copper. The compressor pumps refrigerant between the evaporator and the condenser. It forces the refrigerant through the circuit of tubing and fins in the coils. The liquid refrigerant in the evaporator pulls heat out of indoor air and cools your home. The hot refrigerant gas goes into the condenser where it reverts back to a liquid. It gives up its heat to the outside air flowing over the condenser’s metal tubing and fins.
The Right Air Conditioner
Proper sizing is very important for efficient air conditioning. A bigger room with a bigger air conditioner isn’t always more efficient. In fact, one that’s too big for the room will be less efficient and less effective than an exactly sized unit. An over-sized unit will cool a room before proper dehumidification occurs. This makes the area feel “clammy” and uncomfortable. A small unit is more effective at dehumidifying than a large unit that cycles on and off too often.
Important factors to consider are room height, local climate, shading, and window size. Verify that your home’s electrical system can meet the unit’s power requirements. If you mount your AC near the corner of the room, be sure that it can direct its airflow in the desired direction. Look for a fan control known as “Power Thrust” or “Super Thrust” that sends the cooled air farther into the room.
