DO know the importance of sizing. The HVAC system has to be sized to match your home. An undersized HVAC system will have to run at full capacity at all times just to meet your minimum heating and cooling needs. This constant strain on the system often leads to premature failure and high energy consumption. On the other hand, an oversized HVAC system will turn itself off and on too often, resulting in uneven temperatures and humidity levels. Your HVAC technician should ask you for your home’s total floor area and take this into account when choosing units to offer.

DO test your new system. After having your HVAC system installed, make sure to have your technician test it before they leave. In addition to ensuring that your new HVAC system is running smoothly, this is an opportunity to ask your HVAC technician questions about how to use, and even optimize, your new system.

DON’T forget to register your warranty. Warranties protect consumers against faulty products, but many people forget that to qualify for coverage, they have to register their warranties. Depending on the manufacturer, warranty registration can be done by filling out the warranty card and handing it to your HVAC technician, or completing it through the manufacturer’s website. You may end up shouldering the full repair bill if you fail to register your HVAC warranty.

DON’T ignore routine maintenance. Many people mistake “low maintenance” for “no maintenance” and end up neglecting their HVAC systems. Routine maintenance helps ensure continued performance and reduces the risks of unexpected breakdowns. Manufacturers also count lack of maintenance as neglect, which is often reason enough to void warranty coverage.
