Bad Indoor Air Quality Habits You Need to Break in 2022

According to the EPA, the concentration of pollutants in indoor spaces is two to five times higher than typical outdoor concentrations. Fortunately, a few changes to your daily habits can help reduce indoor air pollutants — and what better time to get started than now? In today’s post, local heating and air conditioning service contractor J & M Air Conditioning & Heating shares the bad indoor air quality habits you need to break this year.

Burning candles. In addition to being used as emergency lighting, candles are widely used for aromatherapy or for “mood” lighting during dinner or a relaxing bath. Candles contain paraffin, a petroleum derivative that emits high levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as it burns. If you must use candles, trim the wick to about a quarter of an inch. Also, try to buy candles that aren’t made from petroleum derivatives.

Not replacing HVAC air filters. The air filters in your HVAC system capture indoor air pollutants, including dust and pollen. They usually get filled to capacity every three months, but may need replacement as often as once a month during seasons of heavy HVAC usage. As air filters become clogged, airflow in the air vents is impeded, which may cause air pollutants to recirculate indoors. It can also increase the workload on your HVAC system and affect its long-term performance. Make air filter replacement part of your heat pump inspection routine if you haven’t done so already. Air filters are easy to replace and don’t require an appointment with an HVAC technician.

Neglecting ventilation. Most of today’s indoor spaces are airtight, with airflow dependent entirely on the HVAC system. A lack of fresh air is what causes a high concentration of indoor air pollutants, which is why you need to let fresh air into your home regularly. Opening the windows for at least 15 minutes a day can help flush out indoor air pollutants and maintain indoor air quality.
