Does it feel like your money is going out the window during with your heating and cooling bill? It might very well be doing just that. One way to prevent that is by doing a DIY home energy audit. While we here at J & M Air Conditioning & Heating would be glad to do a thorough review of your home, you can also start now by doing the energy audit yourself to find problems before they get too big.
Why Do An Energy Audit?
When your system is running efficiently your home is comfortable and your wallet is too. This is because your system is not having to work hard to keep it at your selected temperature. When the system has leaks or there’s some other issue, you can be throwing money out the door because your bill will be much higher. Your lighting, HVAC system and other areas of the home can also be causing issues.
Whether you’ve noticed higher power bills or you just are ready for spring, here are a few things that you should look for before your regular maintenance.
Check all the connections, tubing and areas around your home for air leaks. This could be a leak around the windows, doors or baseboards. You must seal these leaks up to insure your air you pay for is staying inside the home. You do not want to cool the neighborhood. Caulk around the windows that have leaks and make sure to stop up any leaks around doors or baseboards you find.
Inspect your insulation each year to make sure you have plenty. Over time the insulation can lose it’s power to block out the heat or cold from outside and keep your home at the right temperature. When the insulation is not working properly you can see a rise in the power bill. Have your insulation redone every few years to make sure that it is properly working for your home.
Make sure all your appliances are in good working order. If you’re not using something, then unplug it. It can cause a drain on your energy system and thus run your bill up. If you have older appliances, it may be time to upgrade to more efficient units. You will notice energy saving guidelines on the newer units to show you what rating they are and how much they could save you over your current items.
Double check all your lighting to insure you have energy reducing light fixtures throughout the home. You can purchase LED lights or energy saving incandescent light bulbs. This will keep your home bright without draining your wallet. Remember to turn lights off as you leave rooms or use lower wattage lamps when possible.
