The number one problem with most heating systems in winter is not an inability to improve your comfort, ase air blowing out of your furnace or heater is a great source of warmth against chilly winter weather. Unfortunately, this air is also very dry. Low humidity can dry out your skin and lips, exacerbate allergies and cause a number of other respiratory problems. That’s why it’s important to have a humidifier running along with your heating system to help lessen the effects of dry air.
Before you start up your humidifier for a season of continued use, it pays to show the unit some tender loving care. Let our HVAC specialists at J & M Air Conditioning & Heating give you some tips on how to keep your humidifier system in good condition.
Water Panel Changes
Water panels infuse the air with moisture before it’s distributed through your heating and air conditioning vents. These panels function similarly to air filters and, in the same way, need to be regularly replaced. Homes with hard water issues may need more frequent changes, as minerals and other contaminants can clog up the system and decrease its performance. Change the panels in your humidifier at least once before winter sets in, and check them often throughout the season.
Cleaning Portable Humidifiers
If you’re using a portable humidifier, regular cleaning is a necessity. These devices use a filter to add moisture to the air and must be wiped clean regularly. You can also clean out its tank using vinegar. While the unit is turned off, empty out the water tank and fill it with white vinegar. Let it sit for 30 minutes and then pour the vinegar out. This will soften any mineral build-up on the walls and leave the humidifier clean and ready to go.
Seasonal Tune-Ups
A full seasonal HVAC tune-up should also include your humidifier. Having your humidifier checked too will help ensure that you have reliable humidity control all winter, and may even extend the lifespan of your unit for a few additional years. Ask your local heating and air conditioning service provider about regular maintenance programs.
